Many surveys show that keyboards are home for not only dust and common dirt, but also for a large number of bacteria coming typically from food. Unclean keyboard then contain higher number of different biological microorganisms then the toilet seat. So let’s ask a question, when did you last time cleaned your keyboard? You would be surprised how easy the cleaning of the keyboard is.In instructions below I give you some tips and describe cleaning methods. Please remember that not all tips and instructions are applicable for every type of keyboards, for example slim types or notebook keyboards have different system of buttons and their fixing. Never use a force and always think about the fact that you will have to do reverse process.
Cleaning process:
- The first thing you have to do is unplug the keyboard from the computer.
- Now you have to decide if you want to do only surface cleaning by cleanser and cloth or perform the thorough cleaning. Of course we choose the second option.
- In this point I suggest you to do one important thing, take another one keyboard as a mode, take a photo of your keyboard or find picture on the Internet. It will be helpful for completing the device at the end. If you remember layout of the buttons, you can skip this step of course.
- Now we have to remove all buttons, for classic keyboard it is easy, just take screwdriver, knife or a fork and carefully remove one by one button, insert it under the button and push it slowly out. Remove all the buttons like this.
- Now turn over the keyboard and remove all screws, turn the keyboard back and remove the top plastic cover, under it should be a rubber membrane. Remove these two things, nothing more, do not remove electronic part of the keyboard.
- It is time to clean the buttons, actually I mention three possibilities, you can choose the one you prefer:
Cleaning in hands – take a cloth, cleanser and paper napkin and clean button by button.
Cleaning in the washing machine – put all buttons into the bag or cloth and was it up as a laundry. Please in your own interest be sure the buttons will not leave the bag during the washing.
Cleaning in the dishwasher – place all the buttons on the spot for small dishes and was it up. - Same way as in step 5 clean the plastic cover of the keyboard. (where the buttons are placed).
- If you want carefully clean the rubber membrane by a cloth.
- Now we have to compose the keyboard back, place the rubber membrane on the electronic part and then plastic cover on it. Turn the keyboard over and place all the screws back.
- Turn it back and plug the buttons back using the model we prepared in step 3.
- Plug the keyboard back to the PC.
Remember:
- The cleaning in hands by cleanser and cloth is most secure process, the buttons can be damaged in washing machine or dishwasher.
- The arrow keys should confuse you when putting the buttons back, check the bevel of them, it helps.
- During the process please never use force, all components should be removable smoothly.
